The research in the family Pettelkau is one of my priorities.
The family appears with the names Pettelkau, Pittelkau and Peddelkau.
Unfortunately it wasn't still possible to research more than five generatios because of the difficulties with the research source in the Poland of today.
We have thought, that we can assume, that all persons with the name Pettelkau and the derived forms like Pittelkau, Pittelkow and Peddelkau original came from the place Pettelkau in the circle Braunsberg / East Prussia. Now we have informations, that the oldest Pettelkau people came from Mecklenburg. Like it is written, the name is there in 1282, 14 years before the oldest known of this family at first is named in East Prussia.
In the 18th and 19th century persons with this names can be found in several parts of West Prussia.
My ancestors known until now come from Friedrichsbruch / Culm (West Prussia) (christened in Kokotzko). But also in the numerous neighbour places like in Bromberg there lived Pettelkaus. Meanwhile a new trace lead to Pillau (suburb of Wormditt / Kreis [county of] Braunsberg). Possibly this circle closes here and lets prove that all persons with this name come from near the place Pettelkau.
With searching in the internet I have got contacts to a researcher in the USA (Harlan Pittelkau), who is descended from Pittelkau from Bromberg. His research you can find under our united web site
